Forgotten ancient holidays from the past

Holidays that were familiar to previous generations, but have now become obsolete or are no longer celebrated at the same level as before.

Here are some of them:

  • The Overthrow of the Autocracy
    was celebrated on March 12 in honor of the overthrow of the Russian monarchy and the creation of the Provisional Government. Revolutionary events covered the period of late February - early March 1917.
  • The anniversary of the first revolution
    of 1905 (
    Lenin Memorial Day
    ) was celebrated on January 22. It was combined with the Day of Remembrance of Lenin, who died on the 21st. The holiday existed for almost 30 years, and was canceled in 1951. No one explained the reason for the cancellation.
  • The Day of the Paris Commune
    was celebrated on March 18 by the working people of the world to commemorate the victory of the first proletarian revolution on March 18, 1871. Lenin considered the Paris commune to be the first example in history of the dictatorship of the proletariat. He admired her, often comparing his actions with the Communards.

Slavic folk holidays in Russia and Rus': popular

There are a lot of holidays in Russia. Most of them are associated with paganism. The main holidays are the winter holidays, Maslenitsa and Easter. Below we will talk about each in more detail.

National New Year holidays of the peoples of Russia

We start walking on December 24 ( January 6 according to the new style

) - on Christmas Eve. And then:

  • December 25 (January 7) we celebrate Christmas;
  • January 1 (January 14) - New Year ( the best holiday for many people
    );
  • January 6 (January 19) - Epiphany.

It is worth noting that in Rus' there were officially only four days off. But in reality, the people celebrated for almost two weeks.

We decorate the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. We decorate with children's toys, ribbons and various delicacies:

  • marshmallow;
  • apples;
  • cookies;
  • sweets.

After the holiday we distribute all this to the guests.

On Christmas it is customary to visit friends and relatives. There they raise toasts and treat them to Christmas dishes.

But what was the atmosphere of the winter holidays in Rus':

  • Real candles
    . Real candles were lit on the Christmas trees, and a bucket of water was placed next to them to quickly put out a possible fire.
  • Christmas trees
    . Despite the popularity of Christmas trees among nobles and wealthy merchants, peasants did not put them up until the mid-1930s.
  • Christmas cards
    . Congratulations were sent not only to relatives, but also to neighbors down the street. We tried to make the text of the congratulations as beautiful as possible. They even published books with recommendations on how best to congratulate this or that person.
  • Worship tickets
    . On Christmas night they went to caroling, and in the morning they went to church for a solemn service; churches in big cities were often overcrowded, and they even sold tickets for the Christmas service, which were not easy to get.
  • Heart's desire and exorcism
    . On the night of Epiphany, people made a wish; it was believed that the sky “opens” and any request reaches the Savior. On the day of Epiphany, the main event was the blessing of water and swimming in an ice hole; demons were cast out not only from “souls and bodies,” but also from houses.

Ordinary people in Rus' also entertained themselves with ice slides and sleigh rides. There were booths in big cities, and fireworks were set off on Vorobyovy Gory.

On Epiphany, after the consecration of the ice hole, games and fun began. For example, we rode on an improvised carousel and organized horse races.

Maslenitsa

Maslenitsa is a symbol of the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Celebrated during the week before Lent. There are no specific celebration dates here, because they change annually.

Interesting facts about the holiday in Rus':

  • The main entertainment on this day was sled riding, sliding down the ice mountains, games with the newlyweds, fist fights and the capture of the snowy town;
  • when the time came to celebrate Maslenitsa, the effigy was buried, torn into pieces or burned;
  • in some places they jumped over the “farewell” bonfire, in others they burned all the garbage collected in the village or threw pancakes, butter and other food from the Maslenitsa table into the bonfire;
  • coal and ashes from the Maslenitsa fire were buried in the snow or scattered over the field. It was believed that this way the earth would warm up faster and give birth to a good harvest.

All Maslenitsa rituals were dedicated to fertility. On Maslenitsa we ate and drank a lot. People “modeled” a future well-fed life. The most famous Maslenitsa dish is pancakes.

Great Easter of Christ

Easter

- a moving major holiday, which is the oldest and most important Christian celebration.
Installed in honor of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. “ Christ is risen from the dead
” is the main prayer hymn of the Easter service.

Interesting facts about the main holiday in Rus':

  • Easter was celebrated widely at that time - with songs and round dances;
  • in traditions there were triple kisses ( baptism
    ), “games of cue ball” (
    beating Easter eggs
    ) and rolling eggs - this Easter game consisted of rolling Easter eggs down a small slide or along special, pre-prepared paths;
  • In many villages, it was customary to go around the courtyards during Holy Week and congratulate the owners on Easter with the help of special songs. Such crawlers were called “ volochebniks
    ”. It was believed that such a visit promised good luck and prosperity to the owners. Therefore, it was customary to thank him with food or even money;
  • We didn’t go on such “hikes” alone. In the ritual choir, everyone had their assigned roles. The leader was entrusted with starting the songs, and the rest took over. Those who did not have a voice, but could boast of a strong physique, became fur bearers ( carried a bag with the goods they received
    ).

If kissing three times and beating eggs on Easter is not new for modern people, then rolling eggs is rarely seen anywhere now. In modern Russia, all this does not exist.
